Chapter 1

Garden City Movement
It was initiated 1898 by Sir Ebenezer Howard in the UK. Garden cities are to be planned, self-contained communities surrounded by "greenbelts", containing proportionate areas of residences, industry and agriculture.

His ideal is to house 32,000 people in a site of 6000 acres on a concentric pattern with open spaces, public parks and six radial boulevards. 37 m wide. extending from the center.

The Radiant City
First presented in 1924 by Le Corbusier. It is designed to contain effective means of transportation, as well as an abundance of green space and sunlight. It is meant to allow a city to function as a "Living machine". He feels that city is dying as its planning is not in proportion of geometrical one forth.

The Walking City
Proposed by Ron Herron in 1964 in Archigram. It is to build massive mobile robotic structure that could roam the world with their intelligence to wherever their resources or manufacturing ability were needed. This concept made the current Railroad cities and Floating Cities ( Ships like aircraft carriers) possible.

The Metabolism City
This is one of the most important urban architectural, artistic and philosophical movement. It is the start of mega structures, housing that can accommodate large populations. buildings made from this movements are to have replaceable capsules to allow the building be longer lasting.

Participatory Urbanism
This is a urban planning paradigm that involve the whole of the community in strategic and management processes of urban planning. its considered a community development. The people get the responsibilities for the place they live in and have to do it themselves.

The Compact City
This is a movement to create cities where everything is placed together. To create a high density city with central area revitalisation, high density development, mixed use development and service and facilities all at the same place.
